Deben Riding Club

17th March 2008 - Jess Mace presented with the Felixstowe and District Council Achievement Award for outstanding performance  in the field of riding

Jess started riding at the age of eight, a relative late comer compared to many of her contempories. It was very soon apparent that she had a special affinity with her pony Lulu and she quickly progressed from beginner to competent jockey, partnering her 12hh Dartmoor in the show ring with notable success. They became a well known partnership locally until Lulu, hopelessly out grown, was passed down to younger brother Joe.

With funds unavailable for a pony the next size up, Jessica took on an enormous increase in horse power when allowed to partner her Mothers coloured cob Medicine Man. Although seriously over- horsed Jessica created a unique bond with “Badger,” who had come into the family’s hands, following a rescue case, for the princely sum of £1.00. ! This partnership began in 2001 and they have gone from strength to strength. As anyone who knew him in the early days can confirm, poor Badger came to the Mace family unschooled and ill mannered, needing time and patience to bring out any hidden talent. Under Jessica’s firm but kind training he became much more than anyone had dared to hope. Infact with her aboard they successfully represented the Deben Riding Cub teams in every discipline, as well as competing in her school teams and Easton Harriers Pony Club teams. The attached list charts their many successes.

Jessica saves her own money for lessons and when possible has additional training from Sarah Hallows and Evelyn Mayhew. She particularly keenly awaits training from Moray Nicholson, a Fellow of the British Horse Society, who comes from Yorkshire three times a year to coach for the Deben R.C.

As a role model Jessica is outstanding, she has ridden in Riding Club teams and represented her club at the National Championships for the past four years. Her attitude is truly professional, when under pressure she remains calm and is always available to give advice and help to the up and coming juniors of the Club.

We feel she is deserving of this Award.
