2 novice teams competed at the Senior Showjumping
qualifier hosted by Tendring Hundred Riding Club. Despite the recent dry
spell, at least in East Anglia, and the very hard ground on the lorry park, the
400 tonnes of sand which Tendring had rotovated into their permanent outdoor
showjumping arena two years ago, and the sand warm up area meant that most
horses jumped happily and freely. In addition, Tendring have also recently
invested in a Grand Prix set of BSJA jumps so not only was the course visually
interesting and colourful, but there was also an plethora of jumps in the arena
for the horses to look at. The first round was well built – up to height
and with some technical questions such as a triple bar on a related distance to
planks, and several fences with tricky dog leg approaches. After the first
round, the red team were on 8 faults and the black team on 12. The second
round was increased to a very full up 2’9” but as it was over the same course,
there were no new surprises, and riders and horses could learn from their
previous trip round the jumps. At the end of the second round, both teams
were on 16 faults with sadly no individuals on zero faults so no representatives
in the jump off for Lincoln places. As time is used to sort out equality
of faults, in the end, the Black team just inched ahead to finish 6th in the qualifier, with the Red team 7th. It was great to see some new faces on the
jumping team, and some who we haven’t seen for a while, and hopefully next year
some will graduate to the Intermediate team as ironically most of Deben’s horses
jumped much better over the bigger course.
Our thanks go to Tendring for hosting the seniors only
two weeks after putting on the junior equivalent, and hopefully they’ll be happy
to continue running the outdoor qualifier, as they really do own one of the best
outdoor showjumping venues locally.
Cheers
